Apple releases macOS update to prevent damage from third-party dongles and dongles

Apple is again releasing an update to prevent a charging issue from eliminating MacBooks – this time it is to fix an issue where MacBook Pros 2019 and later and MacBook Airs 2020 and later were damaged when connected to USB hubs -C third party and docks (via MacRumors)

It is unclear how widespread the problems are, but a Reddit survey had 74 of 221 respondents reported that their M1 Air or Pro had failed after using a hub. As with all surveys, it is best to consider the results with caution, but there is an indication that some people were having problems.

Most of the problems seemed to come from using a third-party dock, and while some of them appear to be of rather obscure brands, there are some recognizable ones that allegedly killed laptops. In turn, Apple calls them “non-compatible powered USB-C hubs and docks” in the notes for the new update.

It’s a big update, but it’s probably best to install it as soon as possible.

It seems that Apple has had some problems with the power supply recently. The latest update, 11.2.1, was released to fix an issue where some users were unable to recharge their computers if they used up to 0 percent battery, issued a recall for other MacBook Pro batteries that did not charge beyond one percent , and another recall for “a very small number” of Apple Watches that it didn’t carry after an update. Hopefully, this is the last power bug that Apple needs to fix.

If you connect your MacBook to a dock or hub of any kind, it is probably best to download this update as soon as you can, especially if it is one of the affected models. Oh, and if you see this message, be sure to connect it to an official Apple power supply while doing so.

This should perhaps be done with an original power adapter.
