Apple’s latest software update will address an issue the company said is affecting some older MacBook Pro models.

Users running Big Sur on their machines should now see the update for macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 by accessing the Software Update section of their System Preferences. The update description specifically states that “addresses an issue that may prevent the battery from charging on some MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models”, although Apple appears to have included some security updates also.

macOS Big Sur 11.2 released last week with a bunch of updates and bug fixes. Among them, the update fixed Bluetooth connectivity issues, addressed a System Preferences administrator access issue, and fixed an issue with Mac minis when connecting them to external monitors using an HDMI to DVI converter.

In addition to the charging problem on some MacBook Pro models fixed today, but related to charging the MacBook Pro more generally, there have recently been some interesting rumors about charging the next generation of Pro laptops that leave us hopeful. Both Bloomberg and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the company is planning to launch two MacBook Pro models in 14 and 16 inch screen sizes that would abandon the USB-C charging standard of recent years for a return to MagSafe charging ports.

As much as I love the USB-C standard – lots of gadgets, a cable – I can’t help feeling hopeful about a potential future in which I won’t throw my laptop on the floor every time I trip over the charging cable.
