Apple offers free battery replacement for MacBook Pro 2016/2017 that charges no more than 1%

After the release of macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 with fixes for a bug that prevented the charging of the MacBook Pro battery, Apple has just announced that the company will replace free of charge the MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 batteries that do not charge after 1 %.

According to a new support article published on the Apple website, a small number of MacBook Pro users had a problem with the battery not charging more than 1%. Apple says that the affected devices will display the message “Recommended Service” in the battery menu when running macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 or the latest macOS Catalina 10.15.7 companion update.

If macOS indicates that your battery needs maintenance, Apple will replace it for free.

If your MacBook Pro 2016 or 2017 exhibits these behaviors, contact Apple to replace the battery for free. Your computer will be checked before service to see if it qualifies for a free battery replacement.

This issue only affects MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four 3-port Thunderbolt)
  • MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2017, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2017)

To check your Mac’s battery health, go to the System Preferences application and click the Battery option, select Battery in the sidebar, and click Battery Health. For Mac computers running macOS Catalina, hold down the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to reveal the battery status menu.

If your Mac is eligible for the program, you must contact Apple to take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
