According to some leaks with historical solids, including the Chinese leaker ‘Kang’ (via @ DuanRui1205) and John Prosser, Apple can hold its next event as early as March 23. Incidentally, this is the same day that OnePlus is set to launch its new phones.
Apple is expected to announce its long-awaited AirTags – a sophisticated item tracking system – as well as new iPads. There is a chance that we will see new third generation AirPods as well.
AirTags are expected to be a Tile item tracking system, but with steroids. It is believed that the tags will use the Ultra-Wideband radio introduced with the iPhone 11, which will allow your phone to identify exactly where a lost item is, rather than just providing an approximate location.
It is rumored that the new iPads will be the first to use a MiniLED screen. This technology allows for deeper blacks than is currently possible with regular LCDs on iPads, thanks to highly localized backlighting that can be turned off in specific areas.
The current backlight on the iPad is essentially always on, so blacks can only go as deep as the LCD screen allows. MiniLED, while not as effective as OLED in creating deep blacks in scenes with complicated lighting, must be able to get very close.
The March 23 event will almost certainly be completely digital, due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it’s no surprise that we haven’t heard any more concrete rumors so far. We are likely to hear the official word about the event next week, as Apple usually sends out invitations within a week or two before the actual event date.
And if March 23 doesn’t end, the 30th may still be an option; at this point, it seems extremely likely that Apple has something to announce this month, and these events almost always happen on Tuesdays.
