Apple launches self-service portal to initiate activation lock removal requests

Apple today added a new “Disable activation block” page on its website that provides steps that users can take to disable the security feature on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

As noted on Reddit, the page includes a link to initiate an Activation Block support request in the United States, which means that customers no longer need to contact an Apple support representative by phone, email, or online chat to start this process. To submit an activation lock support request, you must be the owner of the device, and the device must not be in lost mode or managed by a commercial or educational institution.

After entering a valid email address and device serial number, customers are instructed to complete a form to prove ownership of the device, providing details such as the device’s original date of purchase, place of purchase and a photo or screenshot of original sales receipt if available. All information provided will be used by Apple or an Apple affiliate company to process the activation block request.

When submitting this information, Apple will review the request and provide updates via email. A support case number is generated for reference.

If Apple unlocks the Activation Lock on your device, all data stored on your device will be permanently deleted. Apple states that it is the customer’s responsibility to back up their device before submitting an activation lock request.

Activation Lock is designed to prevent another person from using your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in the event that it is lost or stolen. When you mark your device as lost on the iCloud website, the device’s screen is locked with a password and allows you to display a personalized message with your phone number to help you recover it. And if the device is wiped, Activation Lock requires the Apple ID and password of the original owner to be entered.
