Apple Inc. AAPL,
is planning a headset that would be an “expensive niche precursor” for an eventual pair of augmented reality glasses, according to a report by Bloomberg News. Apple has long been said to be planning a dedicated augmented reality device, but its first foray into the headset market could be focused primarily on virtual reality, the report said, with a launch coming as early as 2022. The report quotes ” some Apple insiders “who said the headset could be considerably more expensive than competing VR offerings, so Apple could sell just one unit a day at each of its retail locations. The company is lagging behind in the development of AR glasses that claim to be a more conventional product, according to the report. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MarketWatch. The shares rose 2.6% in the Thursday morning trading session. They’ve gained 16% over the past three months as the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,
increased by 11%.
