Apple’s first 5G phones arrived a few months ago, but the company is already exploring the future of cellular connectivity.

A newly published job list for a wireless research systems engineer sparked the company’s ambitions for 6G cellular technology. This list, previously reported by Bloomberg, says the position “will be at the center of a cutting edge research group responsible for creating next generation disruptive radio access technologies in the next decade”.

“You will work on defining system-level concepts, proposing and researching innovative ideas and algorithms, conducting simulations of complex systems, defining rapid prototyping platforms to help prove your ideas and specifying RAN protocols and for next generation cellular systems (6G ) ”, Says the list. Among the responsibilities of the role, Apple says the position will participate in industry forums and academics “passionate about 6G technology”.

Apple did not immediately return a request for comment on the development of next generation cell phone technology.

Apple may be exploring the future of cellular connectivity, but we are a long way from any technology that appears on Apple devices – potentially a decade or more, as 6G is little more than an idea right now. State-of-the-art wireless standard has not yet been set (and is probably still years away). In addition, Apple has just launched its first generation of 5G iPhones at the end of last year. And by zooming out of its latest phone range, many of its products are still 4G devices.

But this is made clear in the job advertisement, which stipulates that a good candidate can be someone who loves “working on challenges that no one has solved yet”. And technologies, of course, that do not yet exist.
