Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) said Wednesday that sales of digital products as apps on its platform soared during the holiday season.
What happened: App Store customers spent $ 1.8 billion in the week from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve, with games generating the majority of sales, the company said in a statement.
This year’s popular game titles include “Between Us” and “Roblox”.

A single-day spending record was set on New Year’s Day, when users spent $ 540 million on digital products, according to Apple.
The company led by Tim Cook said that Zoom Video Communications, Inc’s (NASDAQ: ZM) video conferencing application and Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) streaming app was among the most downloaded apps in 2020.
“Now more than ever, customers around the world have found inspiration and value in the breadth and quality of Apple services, which have impacted their lives in big and small ways every day,” said Eddy Cue, senior vice president, Software Apple’s Internet and services.
Why it matters: The Cupertino, Calif.-Based company acknowledged that applications have become “more essential than ever” in a year dominated by a coronavirus pandemic.
In November, the tech giant reduced its App Store fee from 30% to 15% as part of a program aimed at small businesses.
The iPhone maker revealed that starting this week, many inaugural participants would join this effort called the App Store Small Business Program.

Sales of Apple products, which account for 77.5% of its total revenue, shrank 2.7% according to the company’s fourth quarter results, but its service revenue increased 16.3% to $ 14.55 billion.
Price action: Apple shares closed nearly 3.3% lower at $ 126.66 on Wednesday and gained 0.76% in the after-hours session.
