In the past few months, we have expressed our feelings about the design of Apple’s current line of Macs. Virtually all new launches in 2020 featured a familiar design (read: old), with arguably the worst offender being the iMac 2020. Last year’s machine looks identical to all iMacs launched since 2012. But if new leaks are true , the iMac 2021 is finally about to counter the trend.
According to Bloomberg, the first refurbishment of the iMac in almost a decade will not only involve reducing the giant bezels on the screen, but will also see the machine’s curved back flattened to allow for a much thinner profile. It may still be our best computer for graphic design, but anything that makes the iMac look like it belongs here in the 2020s can only be a good thing.
New story: Apple plans the first redesign of the iMac in almost a decade, with a new look reminiscent of the Pro Display XDR. Also included: Intel Mac Pro refresh, a new half-size Apple Silicon Mac Pro (a modern PowerMac G4 Cube) and a cheaper standalone monitor. https://t.co/pLtNm6D34wJanuary 15, 2021
Bloomberg reports that the new iMac, due for launch in 2021, will feature a design reminiscent of Apple’s elegant (but ridiculously expensive) Pro XDR Display (below), which features small bezels and an ultra-thin body. In fact, alongside the 2019 Pro Display, the 2020 iMac can only be described using one of the internet’s favorite words: chonky.
And the good news for iMac fans doesn’t stop there. Along with a new design, the 2021 iMac is reported to present Apple’s amazing new fast M1 chip, currently found only on the new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini. Launched in November, the new chip is a game changer for creatives – and we’re surprised to see that the M1 MacBooks have already had an unexpected price cut.
When Apple unveiled the ‘brand new’ 2020 iMac last summer, we couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed in the family design – especially with incredible renderings made by fans, like this iPad Pro-inspired iMac circulating online. But with an M1 chip and a new contemporary look, it looks like 2021 can breathe new life into the iMac and confirm its role as the desktop to hit for creatives. And with the MacBook Pro also in line for a design update, it’s looking like an exciting year for Apple fans.
