Apple discontinues iMac Pro, Apple Store says to buy ‘while supplies last’

The iMac Pro doesn’t seem to last long in this world, as the Apple Store on Friday removed all the custom configurations from the product. The only model now available for purchase is the basic $ 4999 configuration and the Apple Store says it is only available ‘while supplies last’. Some other SKUs remain available from third-party resellers for the time being.

The iMac Pro was launched in 2017 to offer more powerful MFPs for high-end customers who want Intel Xeon CPUs for workstations. The chassis was identical, except for a more efficient cooling system and the finish in space gray aluminum.

However, it was never clear whether the iMac Pro sold well. It is located in a niche segment of the market, and much of its place in the spotlight for professionals was occupied by the Mac Pro 2019 tower.

In addition, it is believed that Apple will launch an entirely new range of iMacs soon, with next-generation Apple silicon CPUs and GPUs. The performance and efficiency of the M1X chip (or whatever it is called) is likely to remove Apple’s need to fork the iMac product line and simply offer competitive computing performance for all iMacs, thus eliminating the separate Pro model.

Supply restrictions on some 21.5-inch iMacs are also a sign that a new iMac is imminent. The rumor expects Apple to launch a radically redesigned iMac with fine bezels and a boxy design, similar in style to the Apple Pro Display XDR. However, the exact release date of the new iMacs is not yet clear. Most reports point to a summer release around WWDC, but perhaps the sudden discontinuation of the iMac Pro means that new generation machines are coming several months before that.
