Apollo Crews changes his character, WWE pushing younger stars on SmackDown

Many of you who watch WWE SmackDown may notice that there is a renewed effort to push young talent or talent that hasn’t had much of a chance before.

Otis got a clean win over Rey Mysterio in this week’s episode of SmackDown during a doubles match. It was Rey and Dominik Mysterio losing to Otis and Chad Gable after Otis pinned Rey after hitting his big splash. Otis and Gable came out on top last week.

Meanwhile, Apollo Crews had time for a promotion inside the ring at this week’s SmackDown. He talked about how good and humble he has been, but he has not received the same respect. Crews said he is not “from the neighborhood” or “from the suburbs”, but is a true African American. During his promotion, he talked about his ancestry and said “this is who I am, this is who I represent”.

Crews said the colors he uses represent “wealth, dominance and power” and Big E discovered that last week. His promotion was interrupted by Shinsuke Nakamura, who was scheduled to play with Crews. Crews won by pining Nakamura and it looks like Crews vs. Big E for the Intercontinental Championship will be reserved for WrestleMania.

Others who have been pressured in recent weeks are Nakamura and Cesaro. You can give Daniel Bryan credit for this because he is part of the creative team and has been lobbying to give TV time to certain fighters who have been underutilized over the years.
