Apartment building on the north side collapses after a big fire

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Bexar County firefighters are working to extinguish a major fire in an apartment on the north side.

The fire started around 1 pm on Thursday in an apartment complex on block 4000 of TPC Parkway.

Residents said they had received an alert to turn off the water heater and, moments later, a fire broke out on the second floor of an apartment building in the complex, officials said.

Bexar County firefighters say 50 residents have been evacuated from the building.

The fire then expanded to other units in the building, slowly destroying it as firefighters worked to extinguish it.

Firefighters said they were bringing water to the site and fighting flames because the complex’s hydrant has not been distributing water since it was frozen. Six water trucks have already been emptied and more help is expected.

Several teams of firefighters from different agencies are helping on the spot.

A SAWS map shows a waterfall in the area. Residents of the complex say they have no water, and SAWS says water should be restored east of US 281, close to the Evans and Bulverde roads, on Friday.
