AP: COVID-19 shelter for homeless people in South Carolina to open

GREENVILLE, SC (AP) – Homeless people infected with coronavirus or showing symptoms will soon have a new home in upstate South Carolina. A 32-bed quarantine shelter will open on December 28 near Greenville. United Housing Connections CEO Lorain Crowl said his group and others had received $ 2 million in donations to develop the shelter. PRISMA Health will provide medical care, oxygen, protective equipment and testing. Crowl says the number of people without a place to stay increased during the pandemic, possibly quadrupling in the Greenville area. The homeless service ministry, Miracle Hill, opened a quarantine shelter in April, but saw little demand, in part because of the hot climate. However, partners see more urgent needs as winter begins.
