Anya Taylor-Joy admitted that she probably won’t understand the success of her critically acclaimed role in The Queen’s Gambit for about five years.

Extending the cover of the April issue of Vanity Fair, the Golden Globe-winning actress, 24, said she knew she had to give Beth Harmon’s character “a lot of self” after reading Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel.

During the interview, Anya did not want to know the details of her next role in Hollywood, in an untitled film directed by David O. Russell.

Posing for a glamorous session with the publication, Anya reflected on taking on the role of Beth in the miniseries, which portrayed a struggling orphan in her quest to become the world’s greatest chess player.

She said: ‘We used to play on the set that we were bringing the sexy back to chess.

‘We don’t really think that this is what people really think. I don’t think you can be a sane person and walk around, like, I reinvigorated the game of chess!

Last month, Anya won a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Limited Series or Television Movie for her performance in the series, along with the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Film Made for Television.

Although it has been several months since the program’s launch, Anya admitted that she still doesn’t believe in its success.

She said, ‘I think. I will probably understand this year in about five years. I think that’s when it will probably hit.

‘The second I closed the book, it was already dawn, I will have to give this character a lot of me to tell the story right.’

The film features a star-studded cast including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington and Robert De Niro.

Unsurprisingly, Anya was discreet about the details of the film, but admitted that, even after several years in Hollywood, she struggles to hide her excitement about meeting some of the industry’s biggest stars.

She said: ‘The film was very secret for all of us too. And suddenly you hear those names and you can’t really … But you hear these movie titans and I’m like, I’m a kid! I’m a baby. This is crazy.’

While there are currently no plans to do a second season for The Queen’s Gambit, star Anya previously shared her suggestions on how the story could progress.

Speaking to Deadline, she said: ‘It would be very interesting to see how Beth would be a mother now that she is sober and more aware of the demons that pull her down.

‘It’s so surreal and wonderful that people want a second season, because we never thought about it, there was no discussion about it.

– That said, never say never in Hollywood!
