Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis limped off the court on Sunday night after a new Achilles tendon injury. There is swelling and Davis is due to have an MRI on Monday, according to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN.
At the end of the second quarter of the team’s game against the Denver Nuggets, Davis tried to go for the basket, but was stopped and knocked down by Nikola Jokic. After the whistle, Davis hobbled behind the basket and reached for his Achilles. He managed to get to the line, but he grimaced and seemed to be in a lot of pain when shooting his free throws.
When the Nuggets received the ball, he made no effort to move and made the Lakers commit a foul to interrupt the game so he could leave the game and move on to the locker room.
Earlier this week, Davis missed two games because of Achilles tendinosis and told reporters that he was trying to be as careful as possible due to the risk involved with that infamous body part:
“I think all the other games … I wanted to play. This is just a different circumstance, being an Achilles. If it were a quadruple or finger, anything like that, I wouldn’t mind playing. But I just don’t want to play with an Achilles. Today was the first day we were able to practice, meet some guys to really test. “
“I just don’t want to play a game where I still feel it and then I get hurt and now I’m out of the playoffs or whatever or for several weeks, where it’s something I can’t control and keep now, where you lose two or three games in beginning of the season or mid-season and be ready for the rest of the season. “
It is still unclear exactly what happened to Davis, but I hope it is not exactly what he was trying to avoid. In that case, it would be a big blow not only for the Lakers, but for the league in general.
