Oh Anthem. The only BioWare game that even I can’t defend. BioWare’s attempt at a Destiny-style online multiplayer game crashed and burned when it launched in 2019, and developers have been making an effort to restart and improve it ever since. In May last year, they announced Anthem Next, which appears to be their biggest makeover. But right now the future of Next is uncertain. A new report states that BioWare’s controller, Electronic Arts, will decide this week whether or not it is worth trying to revive Anthem.
According to Bloomberg, EA will hold a meeting this week to determine the fate of the game. They say EA executives will review the latest version of Anthem Next and decide whether it is worth expanding the team or abandoning the project altogether.
The Anthem Next development team consists of around 30 people, although Bloomberg sources say they need “at least triple” the number of developers to properly review the game. They add that Next will make major changes to Anthem’s “core systems and user interface” (which BioWare has already shown a little), although they do not know when or if players will see these changes in the current live game.
“The anthem is a lovely place for you to move around. ‘Ooh, look at that beautiful waterfall, those giant mushroom rock formations.’ But there are so many frustrations to fight for! So many small annoyances that make you angry whenever something happens! Alice Bee said in her Anthem review, “It takes more than a world map to change a little, or have seasons, or better social interaction. You need to change the way it really works, which is asking a lot ”.
Last week, EA said it felt “very, very confident” about BioWare’s future, and we were wondering if that future still has a place for Anthem – his statement seemed very much to be talking about Mass Effect and Dragon Age. For what it’s worth, I’m cautiously confident about these two game series as well (mostly Dragon Age, though, I’m looking forward to exploring the new scenario).
If you want to be a little more confident about something BioWare is launching, they gave everyone a first look at Mass Effect’s remastering trilogy last week. I think they look really cute, with lens flares and everything. They are also making a new Mass Effect that could very well have Liara in it.
