Another devastating day in LA County: 224 new COVID deaths

Good morning LA

For some of us (including me), 101 Coffee Shop encapsulated the feeling of moving to Los Angeles from anywhere in the country. Kitsch, Googie-inspired decor, the usual celebrities and the vague air of Hollywood secrets combined to make it an exclusively local experience.

The dear coffee recently announced that it would close forever, due to pandemic-related losses. I’m far from being alone in regretting the news, but as my colleague Elina Shatkin points out that 101 is not the only historic restaurant to announce its closure as the coronavirus drags on.

Wah’s Golden Hen in Virgil Village has been on the market for 48 years. Unlike 101, about whose closing some important Twitter users speculated before it was confirmed for Eater LA, The owners of Wah announced the end of the race with a note taped to the front door of the restaurant.

“Just over 30 years ago, we came to America with many hopes and dreams,” he says, in part. “We soon joined the family business at Golden Hen, where we would raise our children and see many of our dreams come true and more.”
