South Carolina Swimming LSC is hosting its annual senior state championship this weekend in Spartanburg. As we get closer to the traditional LSC championship season, this is one of the first LSC championship matches we’ve seen since they started being canceled in large scale last march.

State champions and Y-Spartaquatics hosts started defending this year’s title with a bang on Thursday, winning the 200-girl medley relay in a dominant 1: 43.83. This put them two and a half seconds ahead of the runners-up.

The winning relay included Sophia Kannee (27.39), Delaney Franklin (30.12), Annika McEnroe (23.60), and Kirsti McEnroe (22.72). For McEnroe’s older sister, 18-year-old Cal commits Annika, that division is a quarter of a second better than she swam in the state high school championship in October, where almost the same relay (except with Caroline Byers breaststroke) ) won the state title.

Given that she swam the best times on the 100 fly (53.0) and 200 IM (1: 59.2) in that competition, this prepared her for a great race weekend in her pool.

Spartaquatics marked the session with another dominant relay win, this time in the 800’s. There Annika McEnroe’s group (1: 52.23), Kirsti McEnroe (1: 50.87), Gardner Viney (1: 56.02), and Camrynn Wilson (1: 54.96) combined for a time of 7: 34.08 – more than 6 seconds faster than Team Greenville’s runner-up relay.

Other winners of day 1:

  • Sterling Burd Hilton Head Aquatics won 1000 free yards for girls at 10: 11.95, which is a better time in over 4 seconds. Burd’s best event, the 200 fly, is yet to come.
  • Team Greenville’s Silas Crosby he crossed for a win in the boys’ 1000 freestyle for more than 15 seconds, although he was still almost 11 seconds slower than his best time. The big drop at the top of this race came from third place Will Humphreys from the Palmetto Swim Club – he improved his time by more than 21 seconds to go 9: 48.35.
  • Teammates from the Grenville de Crosby team won the boys’ medley 200 relay at 1: 33.99. With 4 relay legs different from those used in last year’s competition, the team was almost 2 seconds better for victory.
  • Like their fellow Y-Spartaquatics on the women’s side, the boys at Team Greenville won the relays of the day by winning 800 freestyle at 6: 59.10. The best legs were a 1: 44.64 start from Jeffrey Stachelek and a 1: 43.20 anchor from Silas.
