Anker’s MagSafe compatible battery will join your iPhone on March 3

Anker has launched a new MagSafe-compatible battery that can be connected directly to your iPhone to provide charging without the need for a cable, 9to5Google reports. The Anker PowerCore Magnetic 5K Wireless Power Bank will launch on March 3 for $ 39.99, surpassing Apple’s own MagSafe battery product for the market – with one major caveat.

The PowerCore Magnetic 5K Wireless Power Bank features a 5,000 mAh battery and Anker’s usual power bank design, including an LED indicator light so you know how much power is left in the device. The device also has a USB-C output for charging with a cable as well. An extra 5,000 mAh is a significant increase, especially for the smaller iPhone 12 mini, but is limited by the device’s lack of MagSafe certification.

Certified devices, like Apple’s own chargers, can charge the iPhone at 15W, while the PowerCore gets stuck with a slower 5W charge. Your magnets can let you stay where other MagSafe accessories go, but PowerCore cannot offer the usual benefits of MagSafe.

It is rumored that Apple is developing its own MagSafe battery accessory for iPhones, which would probably be able to charge 15W faster. The Apple device was initially referenced in iOS 14.5 beta, but that reference has since been removed. Until the accessory is released (if ever), Anker’s new PowerCore looks like a solid option for more convenient wireless charging on the go.

The $ 39.99 PowerCore Magnetic 5K Wireless Power Bank was available for pre-order on Amazon, but it’s sold out. The Verge contacted Anker about refilling the device prior to its March 3 launch and will update if we learn more.
