Animal Crossing’s sold out Sanrio amiibo cards make the internet cry

If you logged in this morning thinking you would order successfully Animal Crossing: New HorizonsOptimistic ‘Sanrio amiibo cards, bless your lil heart’. My sweet summer son, those cardboard rectangles ran out apparently seconds after Target put them on the air. The situation left many Hello Kitty aficionados upset (or at least upset) on Friday.

After all, many people actually woke up early just to spend money on the twee set, only to be restricted by money changers who are now selling Sanrio cards for a fortune on sites like eBay. Even worse I thought they got Hello Kitty cards for pickup at the store, because their carts were full … only to receive an error, or a message that they had already run out. The flaws were plentiful, judging from the posts on social media and Polygon’s own experiences with the Target website.

This turnaround is not surprising: Scalpers have become a plague on almost every nerdy collectible item in the past year, from PlayStation 5 consoles to Pokémon cards. Once it became clear that the Sanrio Animal Crossing set would unlock a lot of extremely cute items and characters, it was practically a foregone conclusion that these cards would run out immediately.

It is not a completely hopeless situation – many are reporting that simply going to a store works or are resorting to hacked amiibo sellers on sites like Etsy. Polygon also asked Nintendo about possible refueling, but in the meantime, at least memes about this absurd situation are worth gold.
