Andy Cohen says the Vanderpump Rules layoffs were “decisions for that moment”

He dismissed a number of Vanderpump Rules stars, including Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute, after his racially insensitive past was revealed last year.

But Andy Cohen seemed to express some regret about the sudden layoffs, calling them ‘decisions for that moment’ in a recent interview with the New York Times.

The executive producer, 52, also suggested that it would have been “more interesting” for the audience at home to see the stars addressing their controversies on the show.

“It is more interesting to sit in the moment with people you have a strong interest in and watch them find their way than just turning off the lights and forgetting that they existed,” he explained.

In June 2020, Bravo announced that two members of the original Vanderpump Rules cast, Schroeder and Doute, would not be returning to the show, according to Variety.

The resignation came after former co-star Faith Stowers first exposed the duo, ‘reporting her to the police for a crime she had nothing to do with’.

Two of Vanderpump Rules’ newest stars, Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni, have also been fired from the series for posting “racist” tweets in the past.

“Bravo and Evolution Media confirmed today that Stassi Schroeder, Kristen Doute, Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni will not return to the Vanderpump Rules,” says the network’s official statement.

A more recent dismissal occurred last month, when it was revealed that the series’ most controversial character, Jax Taylor, as well as his wife Brittany Cartwright, were saying goodbye to the Vanderpump Rules.

During his interview with the New York Times, Andy also took a moment to discuss the controversy over the ‘homophobic’ pastor that Jax and Brittany had originally chosen to make the 2019 wedding official.

“It didn’t seem so shocking that someone in Kentucky’s family pastor was homophobic,” he recalled. ‘I am not tolerating homophobia. I’m saying there is. ‘

After the pastor’s previous derogatory comments about the LGBTQ community were unearthed, Jax and Brittany used former NSYNC member Lance Bass as minister.

Cohen explained that Bravo has ‘been able to build a big tent’ on its network because they are not shy about showing different views / lifestyles / etc. in your reality series’.

This prompted the Watch What Happens Live presenter to bring up the recent controversy surrounding Bravo’s Southern Charm program and fan reaction.

‘Why shouldn’t it be on? Do we want to cancel the South? he asked rhetorically.

Vanderpump Rules debuted at Bravo in 2013 and follows the drama-filled work environment of Lisa Vanderpump’s SUR restaurant in West Hollywood.

And with eight seasons under his belt, the remaining members of the Vanderpump Rules cast are eager to start filming season nine.

But series star Scheana Shay confirmed that the ninth season of Vanderpump Rules has yet to start filming due to the closure of COVID-19-related restaurants in Los Angeles.
