Android Auto adds Smart Assistant wallpapers and shortcut feature

Android Auto has evolved beautifully in recent years, with Google adding everything from a dark mode to a dynamic persistent navigation bar at the bottom of the user interface. One area that the platform missed, however, is the wallpaper department. Fortunately, this is changing starting today.

After seeing evidence that Google was preparing to introduce Android Auto wallpapers, several Reddit users say the feature is being launched. The wallpapers appear to be being implemented through a server-side update, although many users have Android Auto v6.0 + installed. Unfortunately, the updated customization options do not allow users to choose an image from the camera roll. Perhaps Google will allow users to add their own wallpapers in a future update.

Many of the wallpapers are dark and moody, some displaying landscapes and others detailed photos of leather interiors. They convey a beautiful abstract aesthetic that matches the design of Android Auto. To change the wallpaper, go to the Settings app on the Android Auto home screen and scroll down until you see the “Choose wallpaper” option. Apple’s CarPlay previously featured wallpapers, so it’s not surprising to see Google follow suit.

Google is also introducing a new feature in Android Auto that will allow users to add a shortcut to start a Google Assistant query. This includes quickly calling a contact or triggering an Assistant action, such as opening your garage or returning home. It adds a little convenience and makes Android Auto look more like an extension of your smartphone, rather than a completely separate system.

Google hasn’t posted a blog post or tweeted about the new features of Android Auto, so its arrival appears to be unobtrusive. Our advice would be to update to the latest version of the application and simply check if the new wallpapers are available. If you don’t see the update immediately, it will probably be available soon.
