Android 12: see the hand in action mode

One feature that we inform you that would come with Android 12 is the one-handed mode, which reduces your phone to be more accessible with your thumb. This is our first look at one-handed mode in Android 12 Developer Preview 1.

As we reported earlier in the week, one-handed mode is a future feature for Android 12 that aims to help those with taller phones make better use of the one-handed phone. To do this, Android simply shrinks the screen vertically, bringing the top of the phone close to your thumb. Although one-handed mode was not released publicly with Android 12, our Dylan Roussel was able to enable the feature to give all of us a taste of how it works.

Almost identical in design to iOS Accessibility, the Android 12 one-handed mode is invoked with a simple swipe down on the gesture navigation bar. As explained in the tutorial, you can tap outside the reduced screen or swipe up on the gesture bar to return the phone to normal.

While in one-handed mode, you can basically use your phone normally, switching between applications while remaining in the reduced state. Alternatively, at the touch of a button, one-handed mode can exit as soon as you switch applications. By default, it also goes out if you don’t touch the phone for eight seconds.

Overall, one-handed mode looks like a simple, straightforward feature that should be useful for the very tall phones in your life. As we are still at the beginning of the Android 12 development cycle, it is too early to say whether the One-handed mode will actually be released the moment Android 12 is released to the public.
