Android 12 returns to adjust navigation gestures

Navigation gestures on Android 10 and later have been controversial since day one, and years after it started, Google is still adjusting the formula. On Android 12, navigation gestures now work instantly if you’re using a full-screen app.

This adjustment, perceived by Android Police, allows navigation gestures to return and home to work with just one touch instead of two. On Android 10 and Android 11, full-screen apps temporarily disable these slides, which means that you’ll need to slide twice; one to enable the gesture and the second to execute it.

Notably, this may not work for all applications, but it is a much appreciated change in those that support it. Google Photos is perhaps the best example of how this he must to work. When viewing photos in full screen, the navigation gestures work normally, even if the navigation bar is hidden. YouTube, on the other hand, does not support this correctly, still requiring two swipes to use gestures. Twitter is in the same boat with the navigation gestures on Android 12 behaving exactly like previous versions, as shown below.

This definitely corrects a frustrating peculiarity of Android’s pretty good navigation gestures. Of course, given that it looks like apps will need to choose this … it may take a while before we can use it consistently.
