The dark theme was the biggest feature in Android 10, and in Pixel, it adopted a true black theme for the delight of AMOLED lovers. Now, in the second view of Android 12, Google is making its dark theme even clearer than in the first view.
In case you missed it, Android 12 DP1 changed the Pixel dark theme from true black to dark gray, common in Google apps. Now, with this latest release, the theme has changed again, going even further from dark black to lighter gray. Personally, I love this look, but it will be frustrating for the aesthetic taste of some users.
The change can best be seen side by side with DP1, as illustrated above, but it is a big difference that you will notice as soon as you start using a phone running this version of the platform.
Why the sudden change? We are not sure. Google has proclaimed that even gray themes can save battery life on OLED screens compared to white, so it stands to reason that a lighter gray would decrease battery savings. It’s a strange choice, but as I said, I appreciate your appearance.
Android 12 DP2 is now available for download and we are still investigating all the changes. Feel free to leave a comment below or send a ping on twitter if you notice something new that we haven’t covered yet.
