Android 12 DP2: swipe the edge to open the notifications tab

Pixel Launcher now allows users to swipe down anywhere on the home screen to pull down the top curtain. In Android 12 DP2, Google extends a similar notification swipe gesture to the entire operating system.

In the “Gestures” menu of the system on Android 12, this feature is called “Swipe for notifications”. It is different from Pixel’s “Swipe fingerprint for Notifications” option, although the same tutorial animation is currently in use during the developer view.

Swipe down at the bottom edge of the screen to show your notifications

Strangely, the setting to turn it off does not appear on the Pixel 3 line. In our tests, we only detected it on Pixel 4a and later. That said, it works on all Pixel smartphones.

By “bottom edge”, we found that you can start to slide down approximately at the height of a standard bottom bar or floating action button (FAB) to invoke this gesture. Google has done a good job of making sure you don’t accidentally scroll down into an app / feed when trying to quickly access the curtain.

It takes some getting used to, as your thumb may come in contact with the little finger, causing the phone not to fall. Regardless, it is another convenience for one hand, as the phones get louder and louder.
