Android 12 DP1: the dark theme is no longer black AMOLED

As we delved into the first Android 12 Developer Preview, some adjustments were detected, including the dark theme on Pixel devices – which is no longer entirely black or AMOLED.

Initially identified by the team in Android Policewhen applied, the dark theme on your Pixel will look more like a dark grayish blue than a dark black or AMOLED. Now, this can be a frustrating fit if you prefer the pitch-black color scheme that potentially saves battery life, present in Android 11 and earlier.

As the AP notes, the exact dark theme tone with Android 12 Developer Preview is # 171c21 instead of a pure black color. It is up to you how you feel about this change, as some think pitch black is better than gray, while others just don’t care. I must admit that I fall into that last group, it’s not a big deal, but we can understand if it’s for you.

Nothing else has changed in the dark theme in Android 12, all the accent colors you selected in the Styles and wallpapers section will remain unchanged. It is important to note that the adjustment applies to almost all facets of your Pixel device, if you sideloaded Android 12 Developer Preview. A strange peculiarity is that areas like the Settings menu and the app drawer still keep the pitch black theme in the first Android 12 developer version.

This could simply be evidence of other customization options that we expect from the in-depth theme system that we encountered a few weeks ago. We really hope that more options will be made available, as we are sure that, for some, this possible change of dark theme on Android 12 can infuriate some people out there.
