Android 12 DP1: Pixel Launcher gets new 4×5 grid option

Today is the big day for Android 12 Developer Preview, and we’re looking for big and small changes. A small interesting change that we noticed is that Pixel Launcher now offers a new 4 × 5 grid option.

Last year, with the launch of Pixel 5, Google introduced a new feature in Pixel Launcher, adding the ability to adjust the grid size of your home screen. At the time, the only options available were symmetrical – or perhaps square – choices 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 (default).

Now that Android 12 Developer Preview 1 has been released, it looks like Google has added another option to the grid options, 4 × 5. Specifically, this means four spaces in width and five spaces below. As you can see, this is the first non-symmetric option for the Pixel Launcher, offering a rectangular shape that may be more suitable for taller phones.

To switch to the new 4 × 5 grid, assuming you have installed Android 12 Developer Preview, press and hold a blank spot on the Pixel Launcher home page and tap on “Styles and wallpapers”. From here, tap “Grade” on the bottom bar. Now you can scroll down the list to find “4 × 5” as a new fifth grade option.

Interestingly, Pixel Launcher’s new 4 × 5 grid option has a unique effect on the app drawer, as the suggestion line at the top decreases to four apps wide, while the rest of the drawer remains five apps wide. When using a smaller grid size, such as 4 × 4 or 3 × 3, the application drawer is 5 applications wide across all lines.
