Android 12 can renew multitasking in split screen with “application pairs”

Google is reportedly working on a revamped multitasking feature that will allow users to launch pairs of applications on Android 12.

In Android 11, there is a split screen feature that allows users to use two apps side by side. But the feature is a little tricky to execute, so Google is exploring other ideas.

According 9to5Google, the search giant is “working on a complete overhaul of the split screen system on Android 12 with a new feature called ‘App Pairs’”. The current system fixes an application and then starts another one; on Android 12, application pairs will group two applications together to use as a task.

“What that means is that you can choose two of your recently opened apps to become a pair,” 9to5Google said. “Once paired, you should be able to easily switch to a single different app and then switch back to the pair you created.”

9to5; Google created mockups that demonstrate the appearance of Android 12 application pairs

We’ve seen other companies introduce app pairing features before, so Google’s feature would be nothing new. Samsung presented one of the best solutions – also called application pairs – that allowed users to create custom shortcuts for two applications of their choice. It is unclear whether the App Pairs feature of Android 12 will also provide users with the same flexibility.

According 9to5Google information, the App Pairs system of Android 12 will feature a divider that users can adjust. “This divider is really gaining a little more functionality, allowing you to quickly switch the positions of your two applications by double tapping the divider.”

We can get a glimpse of what Android 12 has in store relatively soon. Last year, the first Android 11 Developer Preview was released in mid-February, about a month from now. If Google follows a similar schedule, we can see the pairs of apps in action in just a few weeks.

If you want a possible glimpse into the rumors of Android 12’s App Pairs feature now, 9to5Google we’ve created a useful mockup, which we’ve included above.
