The Recycling Leadership Council will hold a press conference today to “unveil a comprehensive plan to modernize America’s recycling system”.
Great topic and something extremely necessary. But there is something curious about the people who participate in this event. They are members of Congress and representatives of the Consumer Brands Association, Recycling Partnership and Closed Loop Partners, together with the president of the Glass Packaging Institute.
But nobody in the plastics industry or any plastic recycling group. Nobody in the aluminum, paper or steel recycling groups either.
Let’s give the project the benefit of the doubt. The RLC includes the Flexible Packaging Association and Ameripen and the Consumer Brands group includes several companies that depend on plastic packaging, so there is representation of plastics within the group, if not within the groups participating in the virtual press conference.
And the plan can, in fact, provide the necessary structure for all materials to benefit. We’ll have to wait and see, and hope it really works.
