American Idol recap: Hollywood week results – 19th duet season [VIDEO]

Between a contestant’s frightening collapse on stage and an equally frightening performance by future momager Kellyanne Conway, Monday american idol it was full of surprises.

But before we dive into the results, here’s a quick reminder of the notable names we missed on Sunday: Ammon Olayan, Brianna Collichio, Cameron McGhar, Celeste Butler, Christian McGuckian, Christian Terry, DJ Johnson, Erika Perry, James Perdue, Liv Grace Blue, Mason Picks, She Nova, Trinity Rose, Tryzdin Grubbs, Vahhley and Yurisbel. (I would say that they will all be remembered … but this is the 19th season, so let’s not be fooled.)

Those who remained were put in pairs by the judges (a twist in history!) For a series of revolutionary duets. Continue reading for a full review of Monday’s results, including videos of the evening’s best presentations:

LAILA MACH AND LIAHONA OLAYAN | During this couple’s rehearsal process, the Liahona repeatedly emphasized how sad she was that her older brother was eliminated on Sunday. Katy Perry tried to convince her to put those feelings aside and fight for her brother, but from the expression on Liahona’s face during her and Laila’s performance in Rihanna’s “Stay,” it was clear that she was unable to overcome her sadness. Cue some of Perry’s harshest words ever spoken in this program: “Liahona, you would you like be here? “she asked.” Do you? You are not showing this. There are other people behind me who want more, and they are fighting tooth and nail to get it, and you are wasting everyone’s time. ” She accused the Liahona of putting Laila’s dreams at risk and of being “very selfish”. In the end, Perry told the Liahona to stop sabotaging himself … before sending the two women into the next round.

CAMERON ALLEN & GRAHAM DEFRANCO | “Watermelon Sugar” proved to be a decisive song for several singers on Monday, starting with the chill and cafeteria version of this Harry Styles jam duo. It was enough to send Graham through, but Cameron’s news was not so sweet.

BEANE & KARI ERICKSON | Styles’ Grammy-winning song proved equally divisive for this duo, who simply “didn’t deliver as they should”. Beane managed to impress the judges enough to move on to the next round, while Kari was excluded from the competition. And on that note, Perry announced, “We officially forbid everyone from singing ‘Watermelon Sugar'”.

ANTHONY GUZMAN & ADRIEL CARRION | Unlike his Viking duet partner, Adriel was relatively unknown to Idol audiences before Hollywood Week. But we won’t soon forget the performance of the – wait for it – “Watermelon Sugar” duo, which not only brought his and Anthony’s opposite voices together in glorious harmony, but also changed Perry’s opinion of listening to the song. Idol. It was really a win for everyone, especially since the two guys were sent.

MADISON WATKINS and DESHAWN GONCALVES | Several duet partners became close with this experience, but few came together like these two, who talked about getting the same tattoos before taking the stage for an incredible performance of “Stay”. As Lionel Richie told them, “That was a experience. You have two very powerful voices, and your chemistry together was incredible. “No surprise here: the two singers made it through. Watch:

CLAUDIA CONWAY & HANNAH EVERHART | These two singers “from totally different worlds” struggled to find common ground before their duet – especially when Claudia had to go looking for Hannah, who explained that she has trouble relating to people her age because she is a “soul old”. They finally got things sorted out, but that didn’t help Styles’ performance of “Sign of the Times”, which was just unpleasant to the ears. Still, the judges saw enough potential in Hannah to send her through, while Claudia’s Idol the journey has come to an end.

ALEX MILLER & EMISUNSHINE | Luke Bryan tried to divert this folk duo from Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line”, feeling that Alex needed to get out of his old-fashioned comfort zone and EmiSunshine needed a chance to deliver important notes. But they chose to ignore the judge’s recommendation, a risk that paid off with a performance they absolutely killed. Bryan couldn’t even make any criticisms, aside from the need for EmiSunshine to tone down his falsetto a little, sending them both to the next round.

MURPHY & LIZZY O’VERY | I didn’t think I could love Murphy any more … until he joined Lizzy to stand barefoot for his appropriately dreamy performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”. I’m a huge fan of Lizzy’s wonderful, ethereal sound, and I’m a big fan. Murphy fan in general. As I watched him jump for joy when he and Lizzy continued, I appreciated how many sides of Murphy we’ve been lucky enough to try – and I can’t wait to see more.

CASSANDRA COLEMAN & WYATT PIKE | Like two professionals, these two took the stage in perfect balance and crushed “Too Close” by Alex Clare. There was a timelessness in their combined sound that made me want to cheer up Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ Raising Sand. The success was so much for her to overcome her fear, as he supported her as a duet partner, and the two moved on to the next round. Watch:

MONICA LEAH AND MIGUELA | There’s a reason why we don’t hear much from these two, who proved it just because can I hit a crazy high note … it doesn’t mean you should. “It was a classic example of what you no I want to do it, ”said Richie, explaining that his performance was more of a duel than a duet. Unfortunately, the two women were cut off.

RONDA FELTON AND FUNKE LAGOKE | The twists and turns in this performance, my God! First, Ronda was visited by his internal saboteur, to name the great RuPaul. She admitted she felt she didn’t deserve to be there, which Funke countered with words of inspiration and encouragement that really spoke to Ronda. Unfortunately, the performance of Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion in “Tell Him” was a disaster of bad weather, lost lyrics and frayed nerves. And while they received their criticism, poor Funke passed out on stage, broke her chin and was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. (Click here to watch the terrible ordeal.) As Ronda sobbed in the audience, the judges reported that she and Funke managed to get through, despite problems with the duet.

WILLIE SPENCE and KYA MONEE | Willie admitted to being under “a lot of pressure” to take the stage after a crisis, but we needed good music to lift the spirits after Funke’s terrible ordeal – and these two delivered. Willie killed him in the jump, taking advantage of so much emotion and power in his voice. As the duo’s harmonies increased, the judges stood up, with Perry sobbing at the end of the incredible performance. “That was divine,” Richie said to Willie and Kya, before sending them both. “It was an experience. You fractured us. ” Watch:

BEN DODSON AND HENRY THOMPSON | Our time with these guys was short, but between their matching haircuts and the solid performance of Shawn Mendes’ “Mercy”, they gave us (and the judges) very little to dislike. I am curious to see more of them in the future.

JAZZY ROSE & RE’H | Unfortunately, there will be no “down the line” for any of these singers, who simply disappointed the judges with their opinion of Maren Morris’s “Common”. It ended better than it started, but the judges agreed that they have more life experience, cutting them both off.

ZACHARY D’ONOFRIO AND SLOANE SIMON | Catie Turner is not going to be happy about it. His boo was paired with cheerleader Sloane in the hope that opposites could attract each other, but that was not the end result. Bobby Bones warned Zachary that he was dropping into the role of Sloane’s back-up singer, which ultimately led to his downfall. Hey, at least Sloane made it through!

CHAYCE BECKHAM AND CHRISTINA DAUGHERTY | These two had an instant connection, which only grew as they worked together to perfect their version of “July” by Noah Cyrus. Unfortunately, that connection only made it all the more devastating when Christina – whose good performance was simply overshadowed by Chayce’s great – knew she was eliminated. “It hurts my heart,” Chayce said of his partner’s ax, and Katy Perry definitely shared his pain. SAMANTHA SHARPE & ALANA | We haven’t been able to see what happened to these two, but based on the fact that Samantha started again twice, we have to assume that neither of them managed to pass. (Sorry, Alana! You were right to look so angry.)

ALTHEA GRACE & CAMILLE LAMB | This was another stressful performance. Since the jump, Althea felt no connection to Camille, which made her wonder why she was wasting her time on Idol instead of being at home with her daughter. And things only got worse when he learned that his daughter was in the emergency room to fix the feeding tube. Fortunately, Althea was able to channel all her emotions into an impressive duet of “You Don’t Own Me”. She and Camille didn’t just eat that song – they chewed it, digested it and threw it back on stage. This was easily one of the best duets of the night, and both of them absolutely deserved to go all the way.

AVA AUGUST AND HUNTER METTS | They may not know who Ryan Phillippe is (this show makes me feel so old!), But they both know how to put on a show. And even though the judges thought Ava and Hunter played very safe with their easy and light cover of “Dancing On My Own”, they couldn’t deny the beauty of their voices, sending them both to the next round.

ALYSSA WRAY & GRACE KINSTLER | This was the duet I was most looking forward to, and those powers did not disappoint, delivering a cover of “Grenade” so good that it took me back to 2010. (Remember 2010? Good times.) Anyway, their voices sounded incredible – both separately and in those sweet, sweet harmonies – and I’m almost determined to declare Grace the 19th season winner here and now. Some of those notes! These two sailed for the next round and I can’t wait to see what they’ll bring us on Sunday. Watch:

In all, here are the big names we say goodbye to on Monday: Cameron Allen, Christina Daugherty, Claudia Conway, Jazzy Rose, Kari Erickson, Miguela, Monica Leah, Re’h and Zachary D’Onofrio. (I also assume that Alana and Samantha Sharpe were eliminated.)
