American Airlines opens home wine delivery service

The company said on Thursday that a new program – called American Airlines Flagship Cellars – will give customers the chance to buy wine by the bottle, in personalized “curated” boxes, or through a monthly subscription plan that costs $ 99 a month.

American Airlines’ single-bottle wine offerings range in price from about $ 13 to $ 40, and the most expensive offer is a three-pack of $ 300 champagne bottles.

Purchasing the $ 99 monthly subscription gives customers access to discounted prices, a monthly shipment of three bottles of wine, and customers will earn two AAdvantage miles for every dollar spent.

The bottles of wine are among those that would be served to customers with American Airlines “Flagship” tickets, a luxury seat option on international and transcontinental flights.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the travel industry, leaving dozens of planes on the ground and international travel greatly reduced. American is among several airlines that have also suspended alcohol sales during the flight to minimize the time that flight attendants had to interact with customers in the Covid-19 era. American recorded a net loss of $ 3.6 billion in its latest earnings report, and wine sales are not expected to decrease its losses much.

The company expects its new home wine program to generate about $ 40,000 to $ 50,000 in sales during the first three months of the year, an American Airlines spokesman said by email, quoting the company’s director of customers , Alison Taylor.

But the short-term prospect of making money from bottles of wine is not the only consideration.

“While revenue is important, Flagship Cellars is yet another way to engage customers, even when they are not traveling with us,” said a spokesman by email.

“It also gives them a taste of what you can enjoy at Flagship First or Flagship Business,” said the spokesman.
