Amazon unveiled plans on Tuesday for the next phase of rebuilding its Virginia headquarters, with a 107-meter propeller-shaped office tower that can be scaled from the outside like a mountain hike.
The propeller-shaped building is the centerpiece of the proposal, which also features several 22-story office buildings in addition to those already under construction, as the company plans to accommodate 25,000 new workers in the coming years in Arlington County neighborhoods through Potomac River in the country’s capital.
The Seattle-based company said in a blog that the building was designed to help people connect with nature.
“The natural beauty of a double helix can be seen all over the world, from the geometry of our own DNA to the elementary shape of galaxies, weather patterns, pine cones and seashells,” said the company. “Helix at our Arlington headquarters will offer a variety of alternative work environments for Amazon employees amid lush gardens and flowering trees native to the region.”

The sketches show trees and green spaces in a spiral along the exterior of the building, which in addition to a propeller also resembles a Christmas tree or a soft-service ice cream cone. Less flattering comments on social media compared it to a poop emoji.
The company said it would open the mountain’s external climb to the public on weekend outings.

The building itself is considered “alternative workspace” by the company in contrast to the more traditional office space in the three 22-story buildings that will surround the propeller, which will be slightly higher than the other three buildings.
As skyscrapers are banned in the District of Columbia and Amazon buildings will be among the tallest in Arlington County, from some points of view the propeller will dominate the region’s skyline like no building other than the Washington Monument.

In a statement, Matt de Ferranti, chairman of the Arlington County Council, called the propeller project “interesting” and said county residents would have a chance to give their opinion on the project before it was approved.
