Amazon set to hire 3,000 corporate employees in Boston, continue expansion in the U.S.

Amazon.com Inc. is planning to add 3,000 employees to its corporate ranks in the Boston area, one of several expansions of technology jobs in major American cities for the company.

The online retailer said the jobs will be distributed among support teams for the Alexa smart speaker system for Amazon Web Services, Amazon Robotics and Amazon Pharmacy, a new business unit launched in November. The work will include functions in technology and software development.

The hiring plans in Boston add to one of several recent expansions by Amazon, which is the country’s second largest employer, with a workforce in the U.S. totaling more than 800,000 people. The company saw unparalleled growth last year, adding more than 400,000 employees, bringing its global workforce to over 1.1 million. The company added thousands of jobs to corporate offices across America, including in major centers like New York, San Diego and Dallas.

The company’s expansion in several US cities comes almost two years after its plans to establish a part of a second headquarters in New York collapsed after the reaction of some local, state and Congress officials and activists about the project, which included about $ 3 billion in tax incentives.

Amazon said it rented a 17-story office building in Boston’s Seaport development to accommodate its growing workforce in the city. The company said it is not receiving new financial incentives for expansion.
