Amanda Gorman’s poem in the Super Bowl: read here

Gorman, who presented his poetry in the possession of President Joe Biden last month, returned on Sunday night. This time, however, the young poet laureate was honoring educator Trimaine Davis, ICU nurse manager Suzie Dorner and veteran James Martin – all named “Honorary Captains” before the game for their leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A video of Gorman performing his poem, “Chorus of the Captains”, was played before the introduction of the three heroes on the field. The young poetess has had immense success in recent weeks after her inaugural poem, having signed with IMG models a few days later, as well as interviewed by Michelle Obama for Time magazine.

For their actions and impact on

A time of uncertainty and need.

They took the lead,

Exceeding all expectations and limitations,

Elevating their communities and neighbors

As leaders, healers and educators.

Amanda Gorman's journey to the inauguration and the Super Bowl came with the help of a unique group of mentors

James felt the wounds of war,

But this warrior still shares

Your home with children at risk.

During Covid, he even helped

Live football broadcast for family and fans.

Trimaine is an educator who works non-stop,

Providing access points to your community,

Laptops and technology workshops,

So, your students have all the tools

They need to succeed in life and at school.

Suzie is the ICU head nurse at a Tampa hospital.

His chronicles prove that, even in tragedy, hope is possible.

She lost her grandmothers to the pandemic,

And fight to save other lives in the ICU battle zone,

Defining frontline heroes risking their lives for ours.

We will walk with these warriors,

Continue with these champions,

And fulfill the call of our captains!

We celebrate them by acting

With courage and compassion,

Doing what is right and fair.

While we honor you today,

They are the ones who honor us every day.
