Amanda Gorman, our Nationally Awarded Young Poet, did it again – and by “that”, I mean: made history while wearing a high quality coat. At the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, where she became the youngest poet to recite at such an event, Gorman became a national sensation when wearing a yellow Prada coat that sparked surprising spikes in Google searches for the words “yellow coat”. And on Sunday night, during the first official recitation of poetry in a Super Bowl, Gorman was dazzled by a light blue jacket with shiny and trimmed trim, from the Moschino spring 2021 collection. She combined the look with classic accessories: a pearl band and silver rings.
It was a fitting look for the first official poet of the event, who read an original work entitled “Coro dos Capitães”. In a pre-recorded video that aired before the game, she paid tribute to three honorary pandemic heroes selected by the National Football League: Los Angeles professor Trimaine Davis, ICU nurse Suzie Dorner and Navy veteran James Martin, who volunteers at the Wounded Warriors Project. Speaking of frontline workers, Gorman said, “So while we honor them, they are the ones who honor us every day.”
Super Bowl poetry – how cool! In an Instagram post yesterday, Gorman reflected on why she personally is so encouraged by the pair: “Wow, we’re about to see poetry in the Super Bowl for the first time,” she wrote. “It is a turning point for poetry, for art and for our country, because it means that we are thinking with more imagination about the power of human stories, more broadly about the ways to connect, even when we feel more isolated than that never. Besides, I can’t say how many people I’ve heard say they are excited to watch the Super Bowl because there will be poetry in it. “
