Aly and AJ release explicit song “Potential for breakup”

In a move that is sure to rekindle the contempt of thousands of millennials for their unconscious and insensitive high school passions, Aly and AJ released an explicit version of their 2007 hit “Potential Breakup Song”.

The new version is almost identical to the previous one, but the infamous “my stupid birthday” line in the first verse of the song has been replaced by “my shitty birthday” and instead of wanting their stuff back, the two sisters want their “shit back.”

The duo is riding their hot hand when “Potential Breakup Song” resurfaced on TikTok this year, featuring more than 2 million videos on the platform and reigniting the song’s streaming numbers. Launching the explicit version is Aly and AJ’s means of helping to keep pace and works for fans who have aged since the couple’s days at Disney.

TikTok proved to be an important marketing tool to help recover the catalog’s successes. Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” topped the charts for the first time in decades on TikTok, and Simple Plan’s “I’m Just a Kid” went platinum 18 years after its release, when TikTokers started using music as background while remaking pictures of old children.

In addition to the new explicit track, Aly and AJ released “Slow Dancing”, the main single from their next album, on December 2.
