Allegheny, Westmoreland counties see the biggest increase in suspected cases in the month

Allegheny and Westmoreland counties saw most additional greedy cases on Tuesday in about a month, according to local and state health departments.

There have been 348 additional cases of covid-19 (166 confirmed, 182 likely) reported in Allegheny County, the first time that there were more than 300 additional cases reported this month. The dates of the positive tests ranged from March 1 to Monday, with ages ranging from 7 months to 93, with a median of 37 years. Tuesday’s count was the most reported case since February 9, when 405 cases were reported.

In Westmoreland County, there have been 100 additional covid cases (23 confirmed, 77 likely) reported. The county had been in double-digit cases for more than 30 days before Tuesday. The count of new cases is the highest since February 3, when 115 cases were reported.

The total number of cases in Allegheny County is now 78,705. Westmoreland County total cases now stand at 27,303.

Two deaths in Allegheny County and one in Westmoreland County were reported on Tuesday.

Deaths in Allegheny County ranged from November 24 to December 28, with the Allegheny County Health Department noting that the deaths came from importing state data from the Electronic Death Notification System. Both individuals were in their 90s and one was associated with a long-term institution.

The total death toll in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties is now 1,703 and 684, respectively.

According to the state’s covid-19 vaccine panel, 142,820 people are partially covered for covid vaccination (received one dose) in Allegheny County, while 93,824 are fully vaccinated (received two doses). There are 36,940 people partially and 25,441 people fully covered by Westmoreland County covid vaccination.

Covid’s hospitalizations in the two counties were different with Tuesday’s figures. Allegheny’s current number of hospitalizations was 164, five more than on Monday. Westmoreland’s number was 114, six less than on Monday. Allegheny County began in March with 169 patients hospitalized with covid-19. Westmoreland County started the month with 111 hospitalized.


Pennsylvania

The state had 2,975 additional covid cases and 40 deaths reported Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health.

Tuesday’s case count (1,964 confirmed, 1,011 probable) was the second highest of the month so far, with the highest reaching March 4 with 3,028. Of the deaths recorded on Tuesday, 29 are in March, 10 are in February and one is in January.

The new figures bring the coveted Pennsylvania case to 953,136. The total number of deaths now stands at 24,396.

Hospitalizations for covid-19 were 1,530 on Tuesday, 28 more than on Monday. The state started the month with 1,715 hospitalized patients and this number decreased in general, with only two days in March showing an increase in hospitalizations.

As of Tuesday, there were 1,085,121 people partially and 981,209 fully covered for covid vaccination, according to the state’s covid-19 vaccination panel.

Across the state, there were six counties that reported 100 or more greedy cases on Tuesday. Philadelphia County had the highest number of cases with 473. Allegheny (348), Bucks (144), Lancaster (128). Montgomery (110) and Westmoreland (100) completed this list.

In western Pennsylvania, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties had the most cases in the region.
