Allegheny County saw a 39% decline in new covid-19 cases in January compared to December.
The latest Department of Health report shows a total of 15,559 cases reported in January. In December, health officials reported 25,405 new cases.
January had an average of 502 new cases reported per day, as opposed to 820 cases per day in December.
On Monday, the health department reported 169 new cases – the smallest single-day report since 2 November (120). The past two days saw 402 new cases reported in Allegheny County, a 35% drop from the previous week (620).
From January 1 to 15, the county registered 9,549 new cases, while from January 16 to 31, there were 6,010.
Of the 402 new cases reported, 366 were confirmed through 2,100 new CRP tests – ranging from December 14 to Sunday. The county reports that one of the positive tests was in December, while four have more than a week.
Among the new cases, 36 are listed as probable. Health officials define a probable case as one in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or suspicious symptoms with “high-risk exposure” to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.
The most recent cases in the county range in age from 2 months to 99 years, with an average age of 42 years.
Among the most recent cases – 211 women, 191 men – the age breakdown is:
• Ages 0-4: 13
• From 5 to 12 years old: 19
• Ages 13-18: 16
• Ages 19-24: 41
• Ages 25-49: 144
• Ages 50-64: 84
• From 65 years old: 85
The county has reported a new covid-related death in the past two days – beginning January 10. Authorities said the person was over 100 years old and was associated with a long-term institution.
Since the pandemic began in March, the county health department has reported a total of 1,454 covid-19-related deaths. The state health department estimates the total deaths in Allegheny County at 1,521, a discrepancy attributed to different reporting methods.
Despite different reporting methods, the county and state figures reflect a lower mortality rate related to greed in January compared to December. According to the municipality, 556 people died in December. As of January 21 – the most recent data available from the county – 109 have died in January. The state reports that 608 residents of Allegheny County died in December, while 314 died in January (using numbers through Saturday).
Hospitalizations also dropped significantly in the first month of 2021.
The month started with 697 county residents hospitalized with covid, and ended with 311 – a 55% decline. Among patients admitted to intensive care units, the number went from 238 to 89 and, for those on ventilator, from 87 to 35.
Currently, according to the Open Data PA website, there are 313 residents of Allegheny County hospitalized with covid-19, 75 of whom are in the ICU and 32 on a ventilator.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 69,537 cases of covid-19 in Allegheny County, with 55,192 confirmed through PCR tests. There were 337,918 residents who tested negative for the virus.
