Alexi Laiho, lead singer of the Finnish metal band Children of Bodom, dies suddenly at 41

“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we have to announce the death of Alexi Laiho,” said a statement released by Napalm Records, on behalf of Bodom After Midnight.

“We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the sudden loss of our dear friend and band member,” declaration, signed by bandmates Daniel, Mitja and Waltteri, he added.
A statement on Laiho’s official Facebook page said the musician died at his home in Helsinki last week, adding that he suffered from long-term health problems during his later years.

Laiho was the guitarist and vocalist for the metal band Children of Bodom, which was formed in 1993 under the name IneartheD, until the group played their last show in 2019.

The band has sold more than 250,000 records in their native Finland and is one of the country’s best-selling artists, according to their website, with Laiho voted “Best Metal Guitarist” by readers of Guitar World magazine.

The guitarist received several other international awards for his music, and was awarded the Metal Hammer Golden Gods award, according to the management of Bodom After Midnight.

In 2015, he led a group of 100 guitarists at the Helsinki Festival in 2015 playing his own composition, “100 Guitars From Hel.”

Laiho later formed the supergroup Bodom After Midnight. The group recorded three songs and filmed a video clip, which will be released posthumously, according to a statement on its official Facebook page.

In addition to Children of Bodom, the guitarist was also associated with artists Warmen, Sinergy, Kylähullut and The Local Band, said the statement, signed by the management of Bodom After Midnight.

“Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father,” said his wife Kelli Wright-Laiho in a statement. “Our hearts are forever broken.”
