Alexey Navalny was transferred to a penal colony, says the Russian prison service

The exact location and name of the penal colony were not revealed, but Alexander Kalashnikov, of the Russian Federal Prison Service (FSIN), told reporters: “According to the court’s decision, he has returned to where he should be. Everything is done within the scope of the law and the legislation in force. “

Kalashnikov added that Navalny will be kept in “absolutely normal conditions”.

Alexey Navalny remains in prison while the court rejects his appeal. Then he is fined $ 11,500 in case of defamation

On Thursday, Navalny’s lawyers told CNN that he had been transferred from the Matrosskaya Tishina detention center in Moscow, but no details were provided to Navalny’s team or his family about where he was being transferred to.

Marina Litvinovich of the Moscow Public Monitoring Commission (ONK), which observes the treatment of prisoners, told CNN that Navalny will be sent to a “general regime” penal colony, the most common type of prison in Russia.

Litvinovich says prisoners are generally not kept in cells, but sleep in dormitories and are divided into groups. She added that prisoners can work if they wish.

Russian authorities classified Navalny as a flight hazard – a characterization that the activist ridiculed – so Litvinovich said he could be subjected to special supervision or searches.
