Alexei Navalny, leader of the Russian opposition, is sent to the famous prison camp

The lawyer of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny confirms that his client has been transferred from a prison in Moscow to one of Russia’s most famous prison camps to serve his sentence. Navalny, who survived a poisoning attempt, is serving a two-year and six-month sentence for defying probation terms while hospitalized for poisoning. The facility, about 60 miles from Moscow, is known as a “red zone” prison, defined by the hard manual labor that prisoners must perform. Activist Konstantin Kotov was released from prison after 18 months and said THE New York Times he was constantly intimidated by guards and punishments for failing to greet officers. He was also penalized with isolation for borrowing the gloves of another prisoner after the gloves sent by his relatives were confiscated. “Alexey is going to go through very difficult times,” said Kotov. “The administration controls your every move.” The head of the Russian Prison Service told the state news service Tass that “there was no threat” to Navalny’s “health or life” in prison.
