Alexander Volkanovski out of UFC 260 due to COVID-19 protocols, fight against Brian Ortega to be rescheduled

The featherweight title fight between defending champion Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega was eliminated from UFC 260 on March 27.

The announcement was made during the UFC Vegas 22 broadcast on Saturday night.

Unfortunately, Volkanovski was removed from the card due to the COVID-19 protocols, which meant that the entire fight had to be undone with plans to reschedule the fight for a later date.

One of Volkanovski’s teammates and training partners, Brad Riddell, was also removed from UFC Vegas 22 on Saturday due to the same protocols as COVID-19, although it is not known whether the two situations are related.

The fight was supposed to serve as Volkanovski’s second title defense, after he defeated Max Holloway and won the featherweight title and then defeated the Hawaiian for the second time in an immediate rematch.

As for Ortega, he won the title shot in an unbalanced victory over “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung, but now it looks like he will have to wait a little longer before he has the opportunity to become a UFC champion.

The UFC has not announced when the fight will be rescheduled.

UFC 260 will move on to the same main event that heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will face Francis Ngannou in a five-round battle at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
