On Tuesday, during a discussion of Meghan and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Beresford repeatedly rejected Morgan’s rejection of the Duchess of Sussex’s experience of dealing with racism like a real worker. Morgan left the set and finally left the show.
“There is a lot that can be said,” said Beresford in his statement posted on Twitter on Thursday. “Piers’ departure, honestly, was not the conclusion I expected.”
“In the past few years, Piers and I have had a lively and sassy relationship on the air,” added the weather presenter, noting that both were aware, prior to Tuesday’s show, of how their opinions differed “strongly” on how Meghan was treated in public.
“I hoped we could reach a point of understanding,” he said. “It’s sad that we didn’t get there, but challenging his opinion was not an affront. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree ”.
Beresford, who spoke about his experiences with racism as a biracial man born to a white mother and a black father, sought to explain to Morgan how seemingly covert racist comments impact blacks – and how rejecting Meghan’s experience is problematic in itself – to no avail. .
In another part of the segment, Beresford called Morgan for his apparent fixation on the Duchess: “I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you made that clear so many times on this show – several times”.
“And I understand that you have a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or you had one and she cut it off,” he continued. “She has the right to cut you if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she interrupted you? I don’t think it does, but you continue to destroy it. “
That comment was the last straw for Morgan, who got up abruptly from his chair and left the set.
“OK. I’m done with this. Sorry. No. Sorry. You can destroy me, man, but not on my own show. See you later,” Morgan said as he walked away.
Beresford called Morgan’s tantrum “diabolical behavior” when Morgan left the set.
Morgan received wide reaction for his behavior, especially considering his history of bullying and combative comments on the air and on Twitter.
The Duchess’s staunch critic was also convicted of casting doubt on the details of Meghan’s statements to Winfrey that she had thought of suicide during her time as a royalty worker. He said on the air that he did not “believe a word” that she said during her conversation with the media mogul.
British television channel ITV announced on Tuesday that Ofcom, the UK’s telecommunications watchdog, has received more than 41,000 complaints about Morgan’s comments about Meghan.
