Alderson: Mets is still loosely involved with George Springer

Speaking to Jon Heyman of the MLB Network on his podcast (Big Time Baseball Podcast), New York Mets team president Sandy Alderson provided an update on the George Springer saga.

Springer, 31, fits New York’s needs perfectly. A successful field player with a powerful bat probably fits the criteria of any team, but the Connecticut native came as a chance to land in Flushing all winter.

The Toronto Blue Jays has been Springer’s most visible suitor outside the Mets, but apart from these two teams, there hasn’t been much (publicly known) traction to speak of.

In addition, with the addition of Francisco lindor and Carlos Carrasco for payroll this season, some gaps in the list yet to be filled and the next contract extensions for Lindor, Michael Comfort, and probably others, Mets may not be in as strong a position as they were lately.

However, as Alderson noted in the Heyman podcast, Mets and Springer are still in control of each other.

“Given the level of enthusiasm [and] enthusiasm around Mets, I don’t think we were crossed off his list, ”said Alderson. “I would say that we are still generally committed to Springer.”

With a hole in the middle of the field still to be filled and obvious interest from both sides, everyone can be playing a little hard. Par for the course at this time of year.
