Alaska Airlines is expected to pay millions to the family of an elderly woman in Hawaii who died after a fall at an airport in Portland, Oregon – and after the company did not escort her off the plane as the family asked.
A judge ordered the Seattle-based airline to pay more than $ 3 million on Monday to the family of Bernice Kekona, 75, who died after falling off an escalator in 2017 while in his wheelchair at the Portland International Airport, KHON2 reported.

Kekona landed in Portland after visiting the family on Maui. Upon her arrival, she suffered injuries to her head, chest and legs, resulting in an infection that eventually led to her death. The initial incident was also recorded on video.

While the family reportedly confirmed five times that Kekona, who needed a wheelchair, would receive door-to-door transportation, the woman was left to move on arrival, resulting in her tragic fall, according to the Valdosta Daily Times. The woman’s family sued Alaska Airlines and an airport contractor for not looking after Kekona as they had agreed.
Alaska Airlines said in a statement to KHON2 that it was “disappointed with the decision” and is “evaluating the next steps”.
