Chapter 11 Alamo Drafthouse Movie Chain Files, Selling assets to groups of investors, closing three cinemas

“One of the experiences that I miss the most in the past year, besides hugging my friends and traveling, is sitting in a dark cinema, looking forward to a new cinematic experience,” said Wood (also known as Frodo Baggins), who led the attack assembling the cast and crew. “When Tim [League] I came up with the idea that we could come together to bring the much needed support to independent theaters around the world, I grabbed the chance to help.

“We are extremely confident that, after Covid, the pent-up demand for the magic of going to the movies will be very strong and the industry will return and flourish,” said Tim League, founder and CEO of Alamo Drafthouse. “In the meantime, we are grateful to Peter Jackson, the gracious participating cast members and Stephen Colbert for participating in these very special events and allowing fans to experience these incredible films on the big screen in open and secure cinemas.”

The news is a silver lining for the genre-oriented Austin movie chain that caters to film buffs. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema recently announced that it has filed a Chapter 11 voluntary application in the Delaware Court and has agreed to sell basically all of its assets to a group of investors, including one of its founders, Tim League. It will close three cinemas, the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin, and locations in Kansas City, Missouri and New Braunfels, Texas, and halt the development of a cinema in Orlando. Other cinemas will continue to operate, but the company said it will continue to assess the integrity of all rentals during the Chapter 11 process.
