Alamance County confirms third case of rabies in dogs :: WRAL.com

– Alamance County reported its third case of rabies on 23 December.

Animal control was notified of a dog bite involving three people near Hester Road in Burlington, officials said.

Once animal control caught the dog, it was euthanized for human reasons and subsequently tested positive for rabies. Four other dogs were involved in the incident to which animal control responded. Two of the dogs were up to date with the vaccination.

The two dogs that received vaccination boosters are under 45-day quarantine, according to Alamance county officials.

If you live in the Hester Road area of ​​Burlington and have pets, the health department recommends that you examine the animal for any wounds or signs of contact with the infected dog. If you believe that your pet has contacted this dog, notify Alamance County Animal Control.

Last year, the county saw seven cases of rabies in animals.

North Carolina requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies, officials said.

Alamance County officials warn if you are bitten by an animal to:

  • Wash the wound with soap and running water for 10 minutes
  • Write where you bit and a description of the animal
  • Don’t try to catch any wild or stray animals
