Alabama Adds Todd Watson as Special Assistant to Head Coach

Alabama football coach Nick Saban announced the addition of Todd Watson to the Alabama football team on Tuesday as special assistant to the head coach.

Watson joins the Alabama team after three seasons at the University of Tennessee, where he spent two of those years as Director of Football Operations and his last season as Director of Football Programming.

In Alabama, Watson will assist the head coach with a myriad of responsibilities, including school relations, preparations and breakdowns for offensive and special team games, while assisting in camps and clinics.

“Todd has a long history as a successful high school coach in Alabama and, more recently, in the college game on the operational side,” Saban said in a statement. “We are excited to add his knowledge and experience to our team. Todd has always been someone for whom we had the greatest respect as a person and as a coach.”

Prior to his stint in Knoxville, Watson served as Director of Operations and High School Relations at Troy 2015-17. Trojan horses reached 20-5 over the past two seasons and shared the Sun Belt Championship with the Appalachian State in 2017.

Watson was one of the most successful high school coaches in Alabama before joining the Troy team. He posted a record 80-36 in 10 seasons as the head coach of Foley High School, where he coached former Alabama highlight and All-Pro Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons along with future NFL players such as Robert Lester and DJ Fluker .

“It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to work for the most famous program in the history of college football,” Watson said in a statement. “My family and I are excited to be back in the great state of Alabama and look forward to being part of Coach Saban’s team.”

Watson graduated in 1993 from the University of Mobile. He and his wife, Christie, have two daughters Leigh Ashton and Micah, and a son-in-law, Seth Nuss.

Although the appropriate members of the Board of Trustees have been notified of the proposed terms and conditions for this proposed appointment, the financial terms remain subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.
