Alabama adds 4,556 COVID cases, 4,007 from backlog dating back to 2020

Alabama saw a four-digit increase in COVID cases overnight, after a backlog of cases was added.

The Alabama Department of Public Health has added 4,556 cases of coronavirus since yesterday, bringing the state total to 508,229. Of this increase, 4,007 were from a portfolio of old cases dating from 2020; 549 were new cases.

ADPH processed the backlog of cases on March 14.

“These will be classified as confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 reported on March 15, although the tests were carried out from October 1, 2020 to January 1, 2021,” said the agency.

Since March 13, Alabama has reported 10,329 COVID deaths with 303,746 presumably recovered from the coronavirus. Currently, there are 413 hospitalizations for coronaviruses across the state, a sharp drop from more than 3,000 at the beginning of the year.

Alabama currently administered 1.214 million COVID vaccines with that number expected to increase as eligibility – and availability – expand.
